Equipment Sterilization Through Irradiation

The Richmond Beekeepers Association is facilitating an equipment sterilization effort that involves the use of Iotron’s electron beam irradiation system.  The process has been shown to have a high degree of success in eliminating diseases in the hive.  Please read below for more information about the process and details to participate in the RBA group treatment organized for early spring.

Electron beam Irradiation of honeybee equipment destroys the pathogens responsible for many bee diseases, resulting in increased colony health, improved productivity, savings on drugs costs as well as equipment and comb replacement costs.  Widespread, routine use of electronic beam irradiation has the potential to increase health of the industry as a whole.  This does not involve the use of radioisotopes, but rather concentrated electricity.

Our local service provider is Iotron Industries.

Here’s a recent message from David at Iotron…

“It’s that time of year again where your club members are going to be inquiring about Iotron treatment. As some of you are aware we’ve decided to do things a little different this year for the local Hobbyists.

We’ve set aside 3 calendar days for “Same day” treatment. That we are calling our “Bee Days”.

Thursday Feb. 14, 2019 (08:30 am – 3:00pm)

Thursday Mar. 14, 2019 (08:30 am – 3:00pm)

Thursday Apr. 11, 2019 (08:30 am – 3:00pm)

On these days the members will be able to drop off, we process, they pay and than leave with their equipment all in one day. We will no longer be storing members equipment.

The turn around time will completely depend on how many members/equipment shows up. It will be kind of like a “Take a number” in line or waiting for a roller coaster at the fair. Sometimes you get on right away and sometimes you have to wait a few rides. The minimum wait time will be 1hr.

Payment will be required when the treatment is complete and the members are picking up their equipment. We’re only able to accept Cash or Cheque. We’re NOT able to accept credit Cards at this time.

Please note: That once members have dropped off their equipment, they will be allowed to leave for a short period of time to grab some lunch or a coffee. We just want them to return that same day to pickup their equipment.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask!”
