AGM and Dr Medhat Nasr – What does it take to successfully winter honey bees?

January 14 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us for an early start for the AGM followed by a talk by noted research scientist Dr. Medhat Nasr. Dr. Nasr is a highly regarded apiculturist, educator, and regulator with over 50years of experience in both the public and the private sector.  In Alberta, he served as Alberta Provincial Apiculturist from 2002-2019.

Topic: What does it take to successfully winter honey bees?

The beekeeping industry worldwide is greatly affected by the recent challenges to managed honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies resulting in high winter losses often averaging 25%-45% in Canada.  These losses are generally believed to result from interactions with multiple stressors. These stressors include small healthy bee colony population, parasitic mites, pathogens (viruses, bacteria, and Nosema), poor queen quality, starvation, pesticides and other environmental factors.  The presentation will discuss these stressors and how to prepare bee colonies for successful wintering.
