Minutes for January 9, 2018

Meeting held in Kinsmen Pavilion at Richmond Nature Park, 7:30 pm

There were 40 people in attendance.

Meeting called to order at 7:41 pm.

  1. Welcome and introduction of Newbees
    1. There was 1 “Newbee” in attendance.
  2. November 2017 minutes
    1. Motion to approve November 2017 minutes made by Ian Rockeby, seconded by Alan Garr.

  3. President’s Report for 2017
    1. Successes
      1. Great educational speakers all year, with the exception of 1 no-show – many of these members of the RBA.
      2. We hosted 2 international beekeepers, Donald Studinski and Kirk Webster at BCIT and PNE.
      3. We put together a great candle making workshop – thanks to the Sharing Farm for hosting.
      4. We also had a great December Christmas party – thanks to Dogwood Brewery.
      5. A new RBA website was designed and launched.
      6. We purchased a new hand crank honey extractor, a club computer and a microscope with a camera.
      7. We also managed to get a newsletter out to members every month.
      8. The seed bank was started.
      9. New name tags were made for each member.
    2. Semi-Successes
      1. We didn’t quite manage to go through all the old club records and see what we want to keep and what to shred. This can be continued in 2018.
      2. Given our purchases, educational, candle making events and donations to BCHPA, Cottonwood gardens we spent approximately $2k more than projected at this time last year.
  4. Treasurer’s Report
    1. RBA account currently at $8456.19.
    2. There are a number of expenses pending including the Kirk Webster venue, the microscope, and the new extractor.
    3. After all the expenses are paid up the cost will end up being roughly $1200 for the Kirk Webster event.
    4. Membership: 130 dues paid in 2017, down 15 from last year
    5. Motion to accept treasurers report made by Miriam Soet, seconded by Ian Rockeby.

  5. Beekeeping at the Convention Centre
    1. Alan Garr informed the group that he will no longer be keeping bees at the Vancouver Convention Centre, leaving an opening for someone else to take over the opportunity.
  6. Iotron
    1. Darlene Scribilo discussed the process of using Iotron to sterilize beekeeping equipment. She is working out a new system with Iotoron, and once the date has been chosen and the new system is worked out, Darlene will give details for the first run of the year.
  7. Elections – hosted by Hugh Mawby
    1. Nomination for Presidency:
      • First Nominee was Shaidah Karim
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Shaidah Karim was voted in as President.
    1. Nomination for Vice Presidency:
      • First Nominee was Winston Wong
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Winston Wong was voted in as Vice President.
    1. Nomination for Treasurer:
      • First Nominee was Barbara Rockeby
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Barbara Rockeby was voted in as Treasurer.
    1. Nomination for Secretary:
      • First Nominee was Christina Faminoff
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Christina Faminoff was voted in as Secretary.
    1. Nomination for Communications/IT manager:
      • First Nominee was Ian Cavén
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Ian Cavén was voted in as Communications/IT manager.
    1. Nomination for 4 positions of Member at Large:
      • First Nominees were Leslie Williams, Fiona Gold, Eric Crosby, and Jean Stewart.
      • 3 calls were made for other nominations
      • With no other nominations Leslie Williams, Fiona Gold, Eric Crosby, and Jean Stewart were voted in as Members at Large.

    1. Ian Cavén presented photos taken by him with the new club microscope and camera package.
