Dr Nouria Morfin leads BC Honey Producers Association's new multi-year Technology Transfer Program to benefit the bee industry of the province. RBA Monthly Meeting – Dr Erika Plettner, SFU – return of the in person meeting!!!!
By now many of you may have read the recent article regarding another potential weapon in the battle against varroa. Her group studies chemistry and biochemistry projects revolving around synthesis, insect olfaction and communication, and biocatalysis and are in their 3rd year of trials with a chemical compound that could paralyze and eventually kill parasitic varroa mites. She's still working on the final topic but Abbi's, a PhD candidate in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in UBCs Faculty of Medicine. Her project is focused on identifying the physiological impacts of infection on honey bee queens and investigating the trade-off between reproduction and immunity.
